Acai is an antioxidant and anti inflammatory which is used for the treatment of fever, pain and flu. The fruit of dark green oil can be used as an antidiarrheal agent.

Acai Dosing

Acai can be available in the form of juice, powders, capsules, liquids and lotions. You can use 1,000 mg capsule dosage once of twice in a day with food.

Contraindications

If there are any acai palm components with hypersensitivity then avoid using it.

There are not so much information about the safety and efficacy in pregnancy and lactation. There are no specific interactions of acai with other medications.

Acai is basically a member of the genus Euterpe which is native to Central and South America. The palm of Acai grows 15 to 30 m in height. Its leaves are feather like or pinnate shape which can grow up to 3m in length. There are many stems in this plant and there are 3 to 4 bunches of round fruits weighing 3 to 6 kg. There is seed in the acai fruit which is covered with layers under which there is small edible layer as well. The fruit of this plant can be harvested throughout the year but its yield can be highest in the months of August through December.

History

The juice of Acai fruits can be used to produce jelly, syrup, ice cream energy drinks and other beverages. The annual yield of acai fruit seeds is 100,000 tons. The people of Brazil, Columbia and Suriname use this fruit as source of food and also for the treatment of the fever, pain and flu. There are numbers of commercial products of acai available containing antioxidant and antiaging properties. It can also be used for the hair restoration treatment and acne. It is also being used as functional pigment for yogurt and in making cold and flu products.

Acai Uses and Pharmacology

The acai fractions can be used to reduce the proliferation of HL-60 leukemia cells containing polyphenolic compounds. The action of this medication is associated with poyphenolic and polytochemicals. It is also used as an anti inflammatory and antioxidant in vitro.

The lipopolysaccharide and interferon gamma can be extracted by the Acai in cell line with nitric oxide. The nitric oxide synthase can be activated by the overproduction of the nitric oxide which can lead to the inflammatory processes. This mechanism is associated with the inhibition of the nitric oxide. The seeds of the acai can have stronger effect of antioxidant against peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals.

Digestive enzyme inhibition can also be made with proteins of acai fruit in vitro. It can be used in the treatment of the enlarged prostate as well.

There are number of dosage forms of the acai are available like powders, juices, capsule, juices, creams and liquids. You can use it according the prescriptions of the doctor. There is not interaction of any drug food drug is studied with the acai.
